Meet The Team

Meet Ms. Powell

Teaching has been a dream of mine since childhood. In high school, I became a member of the Future Teachers of America Club. At the age of sixteen, I lost my biggest fan and supporter (my mother), so I gave up on my dream. At 24, I revisited that dream and started my journey.

After moving to North Carolina, I started a career in mental health that I really enjoyed. At the age of 50, the yearning to teach returned to my heart. Because of my mental health degree and experience, I wanted to become an exceptional children’s teacher; therefore, I returned to school for EC classes.

To start teaching without my education degree, I entered the Lateral Entry Program for teachers to complete their education degree and receive licensure. I was able to transfer my previous Elementary Education credits to the program. This path was the best and happiest journey of my life. I love teaching for the joy of helping others grow. Born to teach!

I am employed by Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools as a K-12 Exceptional Children Teacher (10 years). I am trained and certified in Orton-Gillingham and Foundations of Reading. At present, I am taking classes to add to my current license as a reading specialist. It is my firm belief that reading development starts at birth and continues throughout life.

Meet Ms. McLeod

I have wanted to be an educator since I was a young girl. I started my educational journey at 14 as a teacher's assistant through the Community and Economic Development Association (CEDA) program in Chicago. After high school, I matriculated at Tennessee State University, where I studied Speech Pathology and Audiology with a minor in Special Education.

After graduating, I became a Speech and Language Paraprofessional for 10 years. I then ran a home daycare for three years and returned to my speech career for another 10 years. I then decided to obtain my Master’s in Special Education from Grand Canyon University.

I have worked with students from pre-K through high school with varying disabilities and levels. I have tutored adults and youth through the years, both in person and virtually.

I currently work as a General Curriculum Resource teacher at the middle school level and am an ESL teacher at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte.

Meet Ms. Turner

Born and raised in the scenic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, I’ve always been passionate about education. After graduating from James Madison University, I embarked on my teaching career while raising my three children. My love for watching children learn and grow has fueled my journey in the classroom for nearly two decades.

With 19 years of teaching experience, I specialize in supporting students' reading development. I am certified in the HELPS (Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies) tutoring program, which focuses on enhancing reading fluency. This program is designed to help students of all reading levels strengthen their fluency, which in turn improves their ability to focus on comprehension and other critical reading skills. I believe that a strong foundation in reading fluency is essential for every child to succeed as a reader, and I am committed to helping my students build this foundation.

I currently teach in a high-needs area, where I am privileged to work with students who benefit greatly from individualized support. My goal is to empower each child to become a confident, lifelong reader, and I’m dedicated to helping them overcome any challenges they face along the way. Teaching is more than just a profession for me; it's a calling, and I am grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of my students every day.
